A method to send administrative messages to active users

It would be nice if you could somehow send a message (a noticable
message, not to the users’ inboxes) to the active users so that they
can be notified that, for example, the system is going down for
maintenance at a specified time. This would smooth out the process of
doing all of these upgrades by helping to eliminate the need for admins
to contact each user individually, or just kick them out of the system
and risk lost work.

It would also be nice to know which users are on which server (in load-balanced arrangements) in the case where only one server needs to be taken off line.

This is big for us as well. The in-system messaging is far too subtle and passive to be effective for a lot of things. We would rather not maintain a separate listserv if we could help it and instead send up/downtime notices through the system to all users.

And for that (and other reasons) it makes sense to us to allow messages to become e-mails as well. If this were implemented, it would probably be best done with the addresses as blind copies so that reply-all chains don't start.

This was announced as one of the features of 6.4 at the Fall 2009 Users Conference
