What version of the software are you trying this on? I just tried this on my local 6.4.1 instance and was able to upload an image successfully using code similar to yours.

Search in custom metadata
Currently, Cascade will only search the wired metadata fields. Here is a link to the idea for searching dynamic metadata:
Ideas
- DTD links for Workflows, Data Definitions, etc...
- Unpublish asset when renamed or moved to another folder upon expiration
- Structured Data Field Progressive Disclosure
- Ability to Supply Different TinyMCE Configurations
- AJAX spell checker for inline editing
- Add 'Date' option to publish sets
- Windows Installer: Minor Interface Bugs
- Site Destinations can not be disabled
- Enable the ability to base Site Roles on original Roles
- Allow nested groups (groups containing other groups as members)
- 'Apply to Children' checkbox for 'Edit' tab of asset factory containers
- LDAP Configuration Front-end
- Better interface for CSS styles
- Folders lose inherited workflows if former base folder is migrated to a site
- Add a description field for destinations
- Support for XSL document() function
- Page options for relative, absolute, and fully-qualified links
- Option for password expiration
- Dynamic Metadata Search
